It was the purpose of the dayschool to provide students with an overview of Unit 4 and help them develop the capacity to handle a wide range of theoretical perspectives and analytical frameworks at the core of the Unit.

In a slight departure from previous years, the programme for the day was revised with view to exploring, at some length, the complexities of the various conceptual and methodological approaches which have come to characterise and underpin the many perspectives on `Development' and the `Environment' over the years.

The session was particularly keen to explore such questions as..

• The meaning of development...
• The meaning of sustainable development....
• The links between the environment and development....

Due to lower than expected attendance however, the planned activity programme for the day had to be revised. The remainder of the afternoon session therefore was devoted to exploring two central themes:

• the meaning and significance of `globalisation' for `development'
• the meaning of `sustainable development' in the age of globalisation.

In addition to the material contained in the reader, handouts were made available
