The author first gives a brief introduction on the Iranian economy between the years 1500 to 1800 A.D. and shows that contrary to the public opinion, the Iranian society and economy sustained irreparable damage due to the ambitious policies and intentions of Nader Shah. He then analyzes the Iranian agriculture and the situation of farmers in the 19th century. A study on production and trade of silk which was once one of the major export commodities and the most important source of foreign exchange income of Iran as well as the reasons for elimination of this industry in 1864 are among topics discussed in the book. A review of the carpet weaving industry and its trade in Iran in the 19th century, investigation into the production of opium and a study on the outcomes of plague and famine in Iran in the 19th century and their effects on the Iranian economy and population are among other subjects taken up for discussion in the book. According to the author, far from indicating the modernisation and mechanisation of Iran's economy the production of cash crops was indicative of the changes carried out in the economy in accordance with the economic requisites of Britain and Tsarist Russia. The author concludes that contemporary Iran is increasing becoming dependent on the international capitalist system.
