The Analytical History of the Iranian Press

Seyyed Mohammad Mohit-e Tabatabaee
MASS MEDIA
Be'sat Publications, Tehran, Second Printing, 1996.

Professor Mohit-e Tabatabaee cites the trip of some foreign journalists and reporters to Iran in 1939 as the motivation for writing this book, saying that before the visit of these personages, members of the Iranian press were inconspicuous. The circumstances leading to the writing of this book were briefly described by the author as follows:

In a meeting, Prof. Tabatabaee proposed to the editor-in-chief of the newspaper 'Iran' that a scientific organization be created for the purpose of training young people in the journalistic profession. He suggested the managers of several widely-read and high quality newspapers in the country can also avail of the training facilities provided by the said organization. Initially, a course on the history of the Iranian press was not offered due to the lack of textbooks and instructors. In 1973, following the establishment of the College of Communication Sciences by the Kayhan Institute, this course was included. In the academic year 1975-76, at the invitation of Dr. Sadr-ed-din Elahi to teach at the college, notes from 1939 and 1940 were used as an introduction to new studies. After some revisions, the 29 lectures which resulted from these studies formed the material for this book.

This book includes the names of all newspapers and their histories, analyses of these newspapers at various periods in history and a listing of illustrated journals in the last section.
